Biography
My academic work focuses on the intersections of religion, politics, colonialism, gender, and political power, with a particular interest in the Philippines. My undergraduate research examined the role of Catholicism in Spanish colonial rule and the development of Filipino resistance and nationalism, as well as the ways colonial religious institutions shaped women’s lives and gender expectations. I am also interested in public policy, public administration, and questions of equity and access.
Research Interests & Areas
My research interests include religion and politics, colonialism and imperialism, Philippine political and social history, gender and politics, nationalism, and political resistance. I am particularly interested in how religious and political institutions establish and legitimize authority, how communities reinterpret those institutions, and how systems initially created to maintain political control can contribute to resistance and political change. My previous research has focused on Catholicism and Spanish colonial rule in the Philippines, including the relationship between religion, colonial governance, Filipino nationalism, and revolution, as well as the effects of Catholic colonial institutions on gender and women’s lives. I also have broader interests in public policy, public administration, education, and issues of equity and access.
